The beautiful town of El Verger is close to the beautiful beaches of Oliva Nova and Dénia. There are also 5 golf courses, an equestrian centre, the protected Marjal de Pego National Park and it is 15 km from Dénia (a gastronomic city registered by UNESCO since 2015). Denia is located in a bay at the foot of the imposing Montgó Mountains. In the middle of the bay is the port of Denia, surrounded by palm trees. Despite its importance, it has retained the atmosphere of a typical Mediterranean fishing port. From here you can take a ferry to the Balearic Islands of Mallorca and Menorca, which can be reached in about three and a half hours. On the hill above the harbour is the impressive medieval fortress ‘El Castillo’, built in the 11th and 12th centuries and later extended. The castle towers offer a magnificent view of the coastline and, especially during the summer season, concerts are often held in the castle. On the same hill there was already an old Roman settlement ‘Diannium’ and you can see the remains of the fortifications and houses found in the archaeological museum at the castle. Other exhibits come from the ancient Iberian and Moorish periods. Nearby is ‘El Castillo’ of the old town of Denia with its narrow and picturesque streets of Moorish origin. Numerous beautiful buildings from the modern period testify that Denia achieved great importance as a commercial centre, especially at the end of the 19th century. Also thanks to the toy industry, Denia achieved prosperity, and the Toy Museum displays exceptionally beautiful exhibits. Close to the harbour is the ‘Baix la Mar’ district with its traditional fishermen’s houses and picturesque squares and streets. Here you can enjoy delicious seafood from Denia, the famous ‘Gambas Rojas’ (red prawns). Another speciality is the sweet wine ‘Mistela’, which is drunk as an aperitif or dessert. Denia has 16 kilometres of fine sandy beaches which have been awarded the EU Blue Flag, the ‘Area de Les Marines’ in the north and the ‘Marineta Casiana’ in the south. Behind the latter is a rocky area that is very popular with divers for its rich underwater world.
